Recession - What Recession? PDF Print E-mail

Recessions, boom years, credit crunches... they are all a natural part of our lives.  An integral part of the huge economy we are all a part of.  You can’t have a boom time without a bust time.  They follow each other like night follows day.  Life constantly cycles.  All the recent noise the experts have been making about global warming for instance.  It is a proven fact that every 10,000 years or so our planet goes through an ice-age.  We can’t fight it, we can’t stop it.  There were no cars, aeroplanes or huge factories belching stuff into the atmosphere that caused the last ice-age and changes the politicians propose aren’t going to stop Mother Nature going through her cycles of life.

National Minimum Wage Details Print E-mail

I am often asked what the new minimum wage rates are so I thought I would post them here for all to see.

The National Minimum Wage rate for workers aged 22 and over increased from £5.52 per hour to £5.73 per hour from the 1st October 2008.  For workers aged 18-21 the new rate is £4.77 per hour (from £4.60) and for workers aged 16-17 it is £3.53 per hour (from £3.40).

There is a website that helps you understand how the rules work, how to calculate if an employee's page is in line with the regulations and what records employers must keep.  It also explains how the NMW is enforced.

You will find the website here.

There is also a helpline:-  0845 6000 678

There are changes afoot promised in April 2009 which will create a clearer deterrent to non-compliance and help provide a fairer way of dealing with arrears of NMW.

Watching breakfast tv this morning, my ears pricked when they heard a story about women “officially” now being able to top up their pensions if they have too many years contributions missing, by making payments of £400 per year for each year missed.  These missing years usually occur when time is taken for having and bringing up a family.  But they can also occur

As the last week or so ticks by until the widely publicised HMRC filing deadline of the 31st October 2008 for paper Self Assessment Returns, it has just come to my notice that some people are not aware of the twists that the Tax Office have put on Partnership and Trust Tax Returns.

For personal Tax Returns, the filing deadline for a paper form is the 31st October 2008, and the 31st January 2009 for an electronic version.

Yes, it's that time of year again. Isn't it worrying how quickly it comes around each time?  I am sure it gets quicker each year!

The 31st October 2008 is the deadline for sending in a paper Self Assessment Return (SAR) and if you want, HMRC will calculate your tax for you - more on that in a minute.
